According to the WHO, the number of people with diabetes in Africa has jumped from 4 million in 1980 to 25 million in 2014. The disease was responsible for more than 320,000 deaths in 2015.
The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) says Africa has the highest percentage of undiagnosed people at almost 68 percent.
These people face a higher risk of developing serious and costly complications if diabetes remains undetected.
Likewise, Hypertension is one of the most prevalent non communicable conditions worldwide.
According to the World Health organisation, hypertension is responsible for an estimated 45 percent of deaths due to heart
disease and 51 percent of deaths due to stroke globally. According to WHO’s Global status report on
non communicable, of WHO’s six regions, the African region has the highest prevalence of hypertension
estimated at 46 percent of adults aged 25 and above.
DIATENSION is a website that aims to increase the awareness of two deadly non-communicable diseases that prevail in the Nigerian society - Diabetes and Hypertension.
We hope by increasing the awareness, the Nigerian people will be able to take precautions and
manage these two diseases better by following the right diet and nutrition, staying physically active
and staying away from what may increase complications with Diabetes and Hypertension.
We aim to deliver core programs and services, specifically public education and
information, support services via the internet, printed resources, health educators and outreach
programs, as well as advocacy. We provide Nigeirans with accurate information about their diabetes,
its effects and what people in Nigeria can do to seek treatment and better manage their condition.
